Stage: Revising
Logline: After losing a young congregant to suicide, Jennifer Martin, the head pastor of a prominent evangelical church in her home town, must begin to reckon with the damage her religious beliefs are capable of causing.
Summary:
Jenny has known from a young age that she was called to be a pastor, and despite pushback from her community claiming that women are not permitted to be pastors, she is determined to pursue that calling. Through the regular diversions of a woman’s life – marriage, pregnancy, and raising a child – Jenny eventually secures a position as the head pastor at Lindville Bible Church. At the top of her career, she begins counseling Jonas, a young man who seeks her help to resist his attraction to other men. But when Jonas dies by suicide, Jenny has to contend with the damage her long-held beliefs can cause. Faced by her rising doubts, a failing marriage, and a rocky relationship with her teenage daughter, Jenny makes a decision that permanently changes the course of her life. The book follows Jenny through the journey she takes in realizing her dream and then dismantling it. When the life she built crumbles, what does it take to build something beautiful in its place?
